Although there are points to be made regarding decanters as a home decor item - they reflect light to make a space look much larger than it is and, if filled with a colored liquid, can give an area the same hue - the main reason for owning a set of quality decanters, is hospitality.

One should never serve a guest liquor out of the store bought bottle no more than they would serve dinner to them out of the actual cans the food came from. I can picture those gallon cans of beans, corn and potatoes contrasted against your beautifully set table.

Of course, the exception to this is wine, and granted, some liquor bottles are quite elegant and are satisfactory for a casual home bar. But one should still own a suitable decanter set in which to hold the bar staple liquors.

And you don't have to attain your whole bar set from the same place or maker. Some of the most interesting bar sets I've seen are put together from a variety of random and beautifully cut crystal decanters. Your imagination is your limit
